How to decide if given URL is fake

Online Scams and identity theft has become a real big problem now a days and its one of the major online crime, In this internet age many people use internet for things like checking emails, chatting, booking tickets, buying online, paying online, but also many people fall into the online scams with fake websites and emails, So I m going to give you some tips on identifying the URL of a website address, where we can find some clues to indicate that it’s a fake website or a scam site.

How to help yourself finding a way to get avoided from scams

Step1: One of the important rules when you are using online websites for buying or selling is to be caution at every given point. Try to stop clicking on pop up ads or links in emails that seems to be suspicious. I would say a very good rule is to type the website address directly in the address bar rather than clicking on the link in your email message, especially if it’s something related to buying selling or credit cards.

Step2: Another tip would be, if you suspect that any given URL is not correct, and then hold your mouse above the URL, then the actual URL will be seen in your browser status bar, and you can see the website name before actually clicking on it.

Step3: Common sign of a URL if its fake or not is if it contains @ sign in the middle of the website address, If a given URL has the @ sign, the browser just ignores everything to the left of that link, suppose, if you visit a website that is www.yahoo@145.33.124.198, you are not taken to the actual Yahoo.com site, it would take to you some hacking site. All the genuine sites and companies use a dedicated domain like www.Yahoo.com and no @ in between the site name.

Step4: A very common tip to decide if a given URL is fake or not is to check the spelling of the given URL properly, many fake URLs contain a similar kind of a site name which is popular or a well know company, this is one of most common idea used by hackers, so just cross check the website URL spelling.

Follow the above steps for a good and smooth internet experience.

If anyone has more tips to add to this, you are welcome!
